In Austria 5.000 to 7.000 tonnes of plastic carrier bags are produced every year. Beginning with 2020 the German government is establishing a ban on non-degradable plastic bags, with the aim to save up to 60.000 tonnes of packaging. Of course, this implies that consumers will be provided with reasonable alternatives.
Trade in particular is in great demand for the reduction of plastics. That's why the Rewe Group (Billa, Merkur, Adeg) has launched a startup competition for eco-friendly packaging ideas. The goal is to package all products of the approximately 60 food own brands of the retail group (eg "Yes! Natural") in a more environmentally friendly manner by the end of 2030. And there are now startups, educational institutions such as universities and colleges and organizations asked to contribute their ideas.
You can apply for the idea competition till February 28 2019. The challenge is carried out in cooperation with the consumer goods company Unilever, who will also be arranging the possibility to develop a prototype. Overall, the best ideas have the chance to work with the Rewe Group and Unilever and develop the idea into a business model. You can find more information and the application here.
